Echoes

These four stories of women’s voices bring together various contexts. Each woman experienced her faith within a different historical moment. Each dealt with cultural definitions of her freedom and responsibility. Each came to faith within a particular church community that understood itself within the philosophical and theological worldview of the time. Each had a different set of experiences that shaped her development. And yet, each of these women found a voice to articulate an experience of faith. Their voices have been preserved to echo in the contemporary moment. Through their expression, we find meaning for our own stories today.

Imagine what might happen if these four women gathered together around a table to discuss their understanding of voice. The conversation, with the aid of interpreters, probably would be alive with staccatos of disagreement and crescendos of alarm as the women explored their experiences from radically different worldviews. On the other hand, their struggle to exercise faith, strength, and commitment to their vocations might bring harmony into the discussion. Could it be that if these women sat down together to discuss “voice,” a deeper sense of “knowing” would take shape among them? If you believe in the importance of the human voice, the answer would have to be “yes!”
